It is a cross-cutting discipline due to the wide range of applications in science and technology. Some applications are as simple as barcode readers, others relate to more sophisticated consumer electronics, sensing tools or spectroscopy. The course aims at providing knowledge about basic as well as advanced techniques for manipulating and controlling laser light and laser pulses. This involves controlling intensity, frequency distribution, temporal profiles in order to design advanced optical systems for specialised tasks in industry as well as research.

The course provides students with a working knowledge of laser physics and provides introduction into nonlinear optics and laser applications. As such, the course provides a physical basis for further study in optics and photonics, and application of lasers in various areas of life, science and industry.
